la isla bonita
i'm in taiwan eating guava at my uncle's house. no photos. but here's the top emailed story of the times today, i'm totally missing the party season in new york, including delicious finger foods--but on the other hand i'm about to go for a fish feast (six dishes, one fish) tomorrow in dan shui for my parent's high school reunion!
photos to come.

we jet set
we are keeping occupied this month of december with some more traveling--tomorrow heading to taipei via narita.
i got a new camera today! so stay tuned for more canon foto throw ups.
today i ran some errands, stopped by odin on lafayette. i like the tiny store in east village too though. get your Y's in the stocking stuffers.
new york minutes: la esquina fish taco, aguaceltas? ageceltas? no recuerdo como spelling. or any spanishing. all i can say is butter beans. baked feta at cafe gitane, vino roug-ino at savoy, returned narcisco rodriguez eau de parfum, kukicha at teany, and blue moon in the west village. tastes and smells of a monday evening.
island coming ups: stinky tofu, oyster pancakes, night markets, grilled squid, green guava, tea making, hakka vegetable buns... i'm salivating. i don't mean to be like this, but taiwan has the best food in the entire world. no joke.
just wait till i throw up snaps of the five course fish feast.
i'll holler from the 12 hour flipside.

wander lust
if you want a guidebook that looks great, has a nice notes section in the back and introduces you to the best aka most expensive restaurants and spas in paris and probably all other cities it covers, pick up your lovely color coded phaidon city guides.
our friend made us a reservation at gaya in st. germain, on rue de bac, where the appetizers started at 30 euro. we were also 30 minutes late, so instead of undergoing painful snooty parisian frowns we went to yen instead. good call!
city moleskines are really lovely though. but we kinda just stuck it out with paris pracitique a map separated by arrondissement.

we stayed in the 7th, from our window we could see the eiffel tower reflecting in the nighttime when it was lit up .

lunchtime
inglaterre interlude
i snuck away to london for a day and a half on the eurostar. why take planes when you can take trains.
yes we went to HAKKASAN. most people there probably didn't get it much, but your two biggest hakka fans were there. we had amazing cocktails (the hakka is not to be missed) and the food was really delicious, highlights: deep fried pepper squid, japanese soft tofu and wood ear on hot plate, and squid, fish, scallop hot plate.
hakkasan was snuck away in a winding street in soho. we also discovered some record shops along the way.
we weren't really allowed to take pixy pix, but from the few photos we snapped, looking at it now, i can almost smell the food from here.
next week i'll be in taiwan so i'll contribute more to the hakka cuisine lookbook.

jardin des plantes
if you've ever read axolotl you'd know why i wanted to go to the jardin des plantes. i went into the garden feeling jet lagged, thirsty, hung over, wandered up the labyrinth. by the time i got up to the gazebo, i turned around and a huge crow stood on the ledge cawing at me. i felt a bit spooked and tried to sneak away quietly down the labyrinth. by the time i walked a few steps down from the gazebo, the whole place was swarmed with crows. quiet and dark.
i walked out of the jardin and straight across from me was the beautiful mosque.

pompidou ooh
one of our first days in paris (were we there? are we back in new york?) we made our way to the pompidou, a leisurely stroll through the marais, the colossal urban sightscape of the contemporary art museum was a bit intimidating to say the least. we wandered in and then wandered right out. luckily atelier brancusi was outside, stunning, peaceful.
